Which budget digital slr camera should I go for?
I’m thinking of buying a digital slr camera. I’m 15 and will plan on using this for a few years. I’ve been using my dad’s old minolta 7d but i feel it’s a bit outdated. I’ve been looking at the Nikon D40 and the D60, as well as the Sony A200 and the Canon Rebel xti. My Budget is around 400 right now. So suggestions on where to buy a dslr with a lens and not just a body will be great. Thank you.

Your not going to find a digital SLR/w lens in the 400 range. You would be hard pressed to find a non digital SLR w/lens in the $400 range. Single Lens Reflex cameras are high end cameras my friend.
If you dont mind used equipment, B&H sells used equipment. Here is a cannon EOS SLR with lens for under $300

Just look on ebay and try to find one cheap.
Thats all I can think of.
SLR is going to be very pricey and most of them will usually not include the lens with your purchase. I don’t know if you would consider a bridge between the SLR and point and shoot. There are several cameras out there that have awesome features close to an SLR that are great. There’s the Canon Powershot S5IS, SX100 IS, Nikon, Olympus, Kodak, etc make similar which has the ISO features, etc. These bridge cameras would be more in your price range. I have a Canon Rebel SLR, a Sony Point and Shoot, and the Nikon Coolpix p80 which is an awesome camera that falls in between the SLR and point and shoot.
You and i have so much alike, i bought the xti(i sold after bout 3 weeks and bought olympus e510) , it okay, but i recommend the a200, my friend bought the sony a200, its picture is amazing, settings likewise, if you amateur get the a200, biggest feature is the in body image stabilization. Between canon and sony, sony better, canon camera’s only have the advantage of being able to use all the same lenses, but if you want good Lens it cost you a good bit of money, usually canon becomes a good camera around the 50d and 5d area, which is about 1-2000$. Now if you want feature packed dslr look at the olympus e-510 or e520, you get all the shibang for good price, got refurb e510 for 419$ on amazon wih 14-40mm lens. or new for about 450-480$. Nikon is okay, but alot of peoplelet themselves go by the fact that it is a popular dslr, but from friends personal experiences , its like the canon, not that great unless you plan to pay about 1000$ models.
Nikon D40 is a great choice.Nice out of the camera result picture quality.Affordable price.Compact size and light weight. You can get it with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens for $413 at amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KJQ1DG?ie=UTF8&tag=computer0bd-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000KJQ1DG
Definitely the Sony A200, you’ll be able to use the Minolta 7D lenses on it for a start! Minolta was bought by Sony, so it is likely that whatever accessories you have on the Minolta will work on the A200.
If your Minolta has the 50mm f1.7 lens, it is EXCELLENT on the A200.
People who don’t know any better will say that your choices are limited with Sony, but they forget that 20 years worth of Minolta lenses and accessories work on the Sony!
I am a photographer by trade over 20 years now in the professional market. I have shot with every brand of camera around , i however have stuck w CANON for the past 10 years. i suggest CANON because their quality is unsurpassed. their lenses are the most prized. next time you watch a sporting event on tv look at the side lines. See those big white canon lenses. thats what all the pros shoot with . Also you can get a good DIGITAL REBEL from a pawn shop and even get lenses there as well. I pick up HIGH QUALITY lenses from second hand stores all the time. i shoot with 2 CANON 50 D’s and i have 2 20 D’s i use as back ups. Also ALL EOS LENSES will fit ANY CANON EOS CAMERA. i have an EOS lens that is 12 years old and it works on my brand new 50D. Stick with a name you trust, also ALL CANON cameras are very similar in operation and all their screen icons are all the same. this means if you shoot with a 400 to 500 dollar REBEL you could also pick up a 50D and have no issues using it as well…. Also i SONY is a great great company for so many electronics however, they are very very new to the whole DSLR market. Their line of lenses and add on items is very limited. they have not really proven themselves in the market just yet. i would go pick up a SONY and hold it and feel how it is in your hands, then grab a CANON you will find the CANON has a nice SOLID frame and design, SONYS are mostly plastic and to me in my own opinion feel and look cheap…
