what is the best digital slr camera to buy?
i have recently got very into photography and have started doing it a AS Level at college, and am being bought a digital slr camera for christmas as i only have a regular kodac digital camera. im looking at around a £500 limit so dont want anything to fancy as it will be my first one :) the main photography i do are portraits xx

First DSLR? At the budget you gave, I would say the D5100 or the T2i. Honestly I like the Nikon better. It is better over all than the T2i only set back is the lack of built in focus motor if you are buying Older lenses with no built in focus motor. Meaning you have to focus manually. The canon has a higher true resolution 17.9 vs 16.1 but that doesn't bother me since i rarely would be having xtra large prints to begin with. The Nikon gets back at the Canon with its 11 vs 9 focus points the Larger sensor and longer Battery life. Plus High ISO, Shoots faster also, Bottom line is you need to know what your preference are. Shall you go with the less expensive T2i with focus motor but slower in shooting speed and low ISO and shoots 440 pics before the batts drain out or the more expensive D5100 with flip out screen lower resolution, faster shutter, slightly heavy and no motor...

Either Nikon or Canon would do for you, they’re both great brands and you are surely never disappointed. I’d suggest two cameras; Canon EOS Rebel T3i and Nikon D5100 16.2MP. It really depends on your personal preferences and what you think feels good to use because there isn’t really much difference in both of ‘em. Personally, i think i’m gonna favor Canon a little more, but again that’s my opinion. I suggest you read the following review to aid in your decision:
