In your price range you can opt for the D90 that is better quality than the D3000, and it comes with a better lens. http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-SLR/25446/D90.html
Canon also has the great T1i and the D50 which is in your price range. If you want to wait a couple months the T2i looks really nice. http://dvice.com/archives/2010/02/canon-eos-rebel.php
Go to a photo store or Best Buy even, and handle the cameras. Which one feels best for you. You’re going to spend a lot of time with your camera, so comfort is important. Also try the menu’s and settings to see which works best for you. Do your research if you go to an electronics store like Best Buy. The salesmen will push what they want to sell. The best place is a camera shop with people that know cameras and can answer your questions. Any of these cameras will give you excellent quality. By trying them out before you buy them, You’ll find the one that’s right for you.
