Suggestions for a good starter digital SLR camera?

I took a beginning black & white photography class using an SLR film camera. It was a lot of fun. I love the whole process of doing my own printing in the dark room but don’t have ready access to one. Now I have a point and shoot digital Canon which is great but doesn’t give me much ability to shoot manually. Any suggestions for a good starter reasonably priced digital SLR would be much appreciated.

Eric, hold onto your hat…

The cheapest DSLR that is worth owning is probably the Pentax K110D, and this is coming from a Nikon fan.

This is a decent camera.

Check out this set-up. You can get the body, the “kit” lens for $440 after a rebate from B&H Photo in New York. This INCLUDES a good memory card, too. (The rebate ends 3-27-07) You can find B&H by going to Yahoo! Shopping, as they are one of the retailers that Yahoo! links to.

“Pentax K110D, 6.1 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera Kit with Pentax Zoom Super Wide Angle SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Autofocus Lens and Sandisk 2GB Ultra II Secure Digital (SD) Card”
If you want “higher” quality and want to spend double the money, get back to me…………and I’ll tell you about the Nikon D80.

Nikon D-40

I would go with the latest Canon Rebel model available where you live. As you grow with your photography, you’ll probably want to upgrade. And Canon has the broadest line of lenses, as well as a huge line of accessories.

Nikon D50 or Canon Rebel XT. Both around $600-$700

Nikon D50 would fit your choice. Here is the page people review it: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/
You may think D40 has a better price, however, it does not support using with old lenses.

Good luck

Hi musikchik,

One vote for the Canon Rebel XT if you wan’t the lowest price or the XTi if you wan’t a little bit more options.

I own the XT and here’s a link to the shot’s I’ve taken with it

Also, if you go into bhphoto.com and type promotional code psjan07009 in the search box you’ll find a nice surprise.

Finally, please do not take all the BS that appears on Ken Rockwell’s website seriously, the guy’s a joke!
