One of the best cameras I have ever owned. No trouble so far and the quality of the photo’s is very good. On the downside it can be a little slow to focus at times. Perhaps I just need more practice using it.

I recently sold a Sony A200 DSLR on Craigs list to purchase this camera. I had my Sony for about 13 months but never felt as though it was a really great camera. I felt it was decent, but I wanted a camera that I felt was a little more solid, and one that took better pictures. The Sony took decent pictures but wanted a little better picture quality than I was getting. Since I been playing around with the Olympus E-520 I’ve been very happy in all respects.

The build quality seems very good, much better than my Sony was, and I really like the image stabilization on this camera. The Sony had this feature but it didn’t seem to work very well from the beginning. The image stabilization feature on the E-520 seems to work much better and is also built into the camera body, so no expensive lenses to purchase.

The dust reduction feature on the Oly is the best on the market, much better than any other manufacturer’s system. Olympus uses ultrasonic vibrations at around 30,000 per second, instead of shaking the image sensor.

The only negative I can see with this camera is that it’s slow at night while using the live view. Live view is a great feature to have but if you are using the camera indoors at night, with live view, the camera is going to be slow. To get past this, use the viewfinder instead of live view and it works great, much faster. So, I guess it’s not a really a negative as long as you realize that there are limitations to live view and that it doesn’t work under all circumstances. I would rather have live view with this limitation than not having it at all. The nice thing about the live view though, on the Olympus, is that it works by just pussing a button to activate- so it’s very easy to switch back and forth between the live view and the viewfinder.

I would recommend looking at the reviews on Steve’s digicams (…) regarding this camera. I did and the reviews were very accurate to my experiences with the camera since using it. Steve also posted some sample pictures to look at and his conclusions are worthwhile reading.

I also took some pictures alongside my friends Cannon DSLR and the results were almost exactly the same in picture quality, detail, color tones, etc. I was amazed at how close they were to each other, when using a tripod and setting both cameras on automatic. The results were compared upon blowing up each picture and viewing on a 21 inch computer monitor. The same quality for abot (…) less in cost over the Cannon.

I would have liked to be able to purchase the Olympus E-620 over this camera, which is the replacement to the E-520. I didn’t feel I could justify (…) more for the two extra megapixels and a few built in art filters. I really don’t do alot of enlarging of my pictures so felt the 10 megapixels would suffice for now. This camera is packed with features and takes great pictures, at a very affordable price now that it’s no longer a current model, and is very user fiendly. It’s a perfect DSLR for the person just getting into digital SLR photography, and it’s a camera you can grow with. At a price of (…) for the camera and two lenses through Amazon, it was a deal that’s hard to pass up and one you shouldn’t regret purchasing.
